The 2012 champion, who defeated James Wade and Mark Webster in the previous knockout rounds went down after a successful tournament, which saw him return to the world’s top 16.

World number one van Gerwen rallied back from falling 7-4 behind with an unstoppable five-leg streak to take control before closing out the win at London’s O2.

van Barneveld had produced an incredible run of form to reach the play-offs having been uncertain of survival after nine-weeks and it took an inspired display to end his campaign.

The Dutch star suffered a 3-1 loss to King, but was visibly showing the pain of a back problem during the game’s later stages – despite winning the third set to threaten a similar comeback to the one he produced in his first round defeat of Dave Chisnall.


However, van Barneveld missed 30 starting doubles in the fourth set – including being whitewashed in the opening leg – as King eased into the quarter-finals at Dublin’s Citywest Hotel. more
