Raymond van Barneveld booked his place in the last 16 of the Players Championship with 6-5 victory against Mervyn King on Friday evening.

The Dutchman, who was knocked out of the Grand Slam of Darts by King earlier this month, gained his revenge by edging an exciting first round match in Minehead.

van Barneveld pegged double four to win the opening leg before doubling his lead with an eleven-darter, which culminated in an 86 finish.

King responded by taking out 140 before drawing level despite ‘Barney’ landing his second 180 of the match.

A third maximum helped van Barneveld edge back in front and the five-time World Champion restored a two-leg cushion by bedding tops.

King hit back, taking the next two legs before the ninth and tenth were shared to force a decider, which ‘Barney’ won by sinking double 16.

van Barneveld will face Robert Thornton in the second round on Saturday.
