‘Barney’, who had seen off Simon Whitlock and Terry Jenkins to reach the semi-finals of the third staging of the tournament, claimed an impressive 11-6 victory against Scotland’s Anderson to win through to the final.

But there, he was on the receiving end of an 11-6 defeat after an inspired performance from world number one van Gerwen, who averaged 112, left van Barneveld to settle for the runner-up place.

The five-time World Champion will now turn his attentions to defending his Premier League title. The tournament kicks off in Leeds on Thursday.
